I am still around, I promise. Life has just gotten pretty busy with work, vacations, the holidays, etc... I'm sure you all understand. I also spend most of the year at work and take most of my vacations around now so I'm in and out of the house and town. Luckily, I have been running whenever I can.
I recently went back home to California, which meant I went from 80 degrees to 40-50 degrees, which is not fun for someone who likes it around 70 degrees. And I know some of you get snow and think 40s are great, but I have avoided snow for a reason... Still, I managed one, cold outside run while I was home. It gave me an excuse to wear long running gear! I have to say, I love my Nike running pants. They're soft, warm, and super comfortable to run and walk in. The only problem is I forgot them back home and have to wait a few weeks for my parents to come out here before I get them back... Luckily, it's warm enough to still be running in capris in Florida.
I also manager to get sick... the worst I've been sick in a few years. I was forced to be in bed for over 12 hours, only managing to get up for a trip to the restroom. Luckily whatever it was (which is still debatable) only lasted less than 24 hours and I was back to working out two days later. That's the good thing about when I get really bed-ridden sick... I'm miserable and feel like I'm going to die, but for me it is typically quick.
I've been back in Florida for a few days now and I've been able to get back on the elliptical as well as get outside and run. The 60-70 degree mornings have been perfect, although they are expecting a cold front for the end of this week... right in time for my Christmas themed Reindeer Run 5k this Saturday!
The Reindeer Run is one of my favorite short little races and I haven't been able to do it for the last few years. But luckily this year I have the day off and I signed up for it as soon as I could. So far none of my usual 5k companions are going to be able to make it, but that's fine, I love this race regardless. More updates about the run to come!

Starting Over Again and Again and Again
The worst part about balancing a crazy life with workouts, is that when life gets really, really crazy and the workouts get forgotten for a bit, it seems like I'm starting all over... again. This cycle is absolutely killing me!
It's not like I'm giving up and then deciding to restart in my determination. Even in those periods where I don't want to run, I still am running and working out. Yet I always feel like I get to a good place and then something happens (busy work schedule, vacation, getting sick...) and I'm back at square one.
Today was no different. I was having a hard time getting going and getting back to the same speed and fitness level I was at before everything went crazy. I know I'll eventually get there, I just hate the waiting and rebuilding. Plus, I have my first real vacation home next week, but luckily I'm not planning on taking a vacation from running. If anything, the change in scenery and the lack of a work schedule will probably be better for my motivation.

In A Rut
Life has gotten to me once again and I'm struggling, if not completely failing at keeping up my running. Just in the last week I've had 3 birthday parties (mine included), a white trash bash, and a failed expedition to a trampoline place (not really sure what you call them... but it's just a giant building filled with trampolines). Due to my busy schedule, I have not been getting out on runs or even getting in regular workouts.
And I feel like crap currently because of it. I was able to get my ass off the couch tonight to get a short, but sweet abs routine in, but that was pushing it (I also was at work for 10 hours today...). I'm planning on some arm and leg workouts in the next day or two, but we'll see what life has planned for me.
Hopefully I'll be hitting the pavement very soon... and hopefully I'm able to get some motivation again...

Feeling Guilty
I know I should have had another run by now... even just a 2 miler... but I just haven't been able to muster the energy to get out there and run. I'm really starting to feel guilty about it too. Luckily tomorrow is my Saturday so I'll be getting a run in, not sure how far. This is my recovery week so I won't be going too far in one run, but I'm getting restless.
It's one of the worst feelings, I think, for an athlete. You want to workout, you want to get a good practice in, but you just don't have any injury. For me, I think of everything that the run could be benefiting, but that still doesn't help. I'm not being completely lazy, I do get a few 20 minute circuits in, but I tend to collapse or take a late afternoon nap pretty soon after.
This is one of the downsides of having a job that keeps me outside and in the humidity. Yet, that's also something that comforts me. I'm not getting tired after a day of sitting at the computer. No, I'm getting tired after an 8 hour work day where I'm walk and being pretty active in the heat. That's also a fact that has me denying the truth that we're just barely getting into summer and the heat and humidity is about to get a lot worse (even though I can't fathom how...).
Hopefully I'll have a run report for you all tomorrow morning... and hopefully it will be a good one.

It's Going To Be A Lazy Day...
It definitely didn't start as a lazy day, but the rest of it will be. It's kind of sad I'm saying that and it's not even 10 AM yet!
I was able to get up and get out for a run just as the sun was coming up. Florida's been pretty cool the last few days and I was completely ready to take advantage of it. I got up without a goal in mind, tied my shoes, decided on the general route I wanted to take, and started to run. I was out there for 1 hour 10 minutes and was able to run just over 7 miles. My pace is definitely coming back, which I'm excited about, and when I do walk, I'm walking sub 16 minute miles.
I found myself getting into my running the farther I went. My miles 3.5-6.5 were the best. I just felt good and walked some, but not too much. Eventually my calves started to get tighter and tighter. They didn't stop me from running, but I didn't want to push them too far so I ended at 7 miles.
Here's the funniest thing though, my ankles actually hurt more when I'm walking normally than when I run. Isn't that crazy? Running actually makes me feel better!
So now that my run is over, it's time for me to relax and enjoy my TWO days off! Yes, that's right, after working 6-7 days a week for the last month and a half, I finally get two full days off! I plan on taking advantage of them as well, and by that I mean relaxing and not worrying about anything...

Social Life vs Working Out
I'm still struggling finding good times to run, and this time work is only playing one part in it. This week it's been my social life that's been getting in the way. I've been running a bit more in the afternoons after work, but my friends and I also plan things at work and thus, my runs get pushed to the wayside again.
In the past, my social life was what took the hit for my athletics. Competitive swimmers and a lot of other athletes, really don't get too much of a life outside of the sport. That's one of the reasons your team tends to be tied into your social life. Now, it's the opposite.
It's nice to have friends and hang out with them outside of work. Plus, I've been introduced to a lot of great hang out spots and so we're constantly going out to relax after work or just on our days off.
Still, I know I need to find a time to run and it is constantly in the back of my mind. I'm always trying to mentally work out when I'm working, when I can run, and when I'm spending time with someone. Life is tricky... and whenever I think I have it figured out, it throws me a curve ball.
Luckily, I can always count on my days off from work. Like today! Tonight I'm seeing a movie with a group from work, but I was able to get a 5.25 mile run in this morning before most people I knew where even headed to work.
I know balancing work, working out, and a social life is doable... it just get complicated at times.

Work vs Working Out
In the never ending battle between work schedules and working out commitments, it seems as though the work schedules always come out on top and working out gets pushed to the next day, and the next day, and the next day.
Part of the reason I have been having working out is because my job is just so active in itself. Yesterday I had two tours so I was walking most of the day. The day before I was standing at our greeter podium talking to guests that walked up. That was actually more like 4-5 hours of just standing in one area and that in itself is hard. Between those two days, I have decided that standing for hours on end is worse than walking. For one, standing doesn't makes time go by so slowly... and my muscles just freeze up eventually. I need to keep moving!
I really wish that I had the time and energy to workout, but I do not regret the missed workouts. I know that if I had kept up my vigorous workouts, then I wouldn't have had the energy to survive the week. Unfortunately, it's just that time when I have to sacrifice my workouts in order to keep going. Luckily, the busy season should be ending soon and I'll be able to get back into my workout routine.

Surprising Myself
I have always been an advocate of running in the mornings. I've never really liked running or even working out in the evenings just because I'm so tired from the rest of my day that I usually just pass out.
Today, I don't know... it was just different. I got home and got my running clothes together before taking off on a run. I set my Nike+ App to 2.5 miles because I knew that was the least that I needed to do for this run. Well, I ended up getting 3.1 in.
I surprised myself on two fronts today. The first being that I actually ran this afternoon and that I ran farther than expected. I am definitely proud of myself. Personally, this has been a great week. My weight has been dropping pretty steadily and I've just felt good.
Considering today was the day 2 out of 13 days straight of work... I might not be singing the same tune next week. We'll see though. Maybe I'll continue to surprise myself.
The only surprise I wasn't happy with was the battalion of fire ants that showed up in my house this evening. I have won the war... or at least the battle thus far.

Running Faster, Running Farther
I took most of the last week off from exercising because my mom had come to visit me and help set up my new house. I was pretty much working 8 hours, and then spending the rest of the day with her. To say I was exhausted would be an understatement. However, it was a great weekend with my mom so even though I was really tired I was having fun.
Still, the busy weekend forced me to take a few days off from running and working out. Today is my day off of work and while I plan on being lazy as much as possible, I still wanted to get some workouts in. This morning I stepped outside as the sun was just starting to break the horizon and planned on a nice relaxing 5 mile run. It didn't end that way...
It was just one of those days I felt better than planned and decided to take full advantage of that wonderful feeling. I started with my normal route, took my normal breaks, but when I would have started to head home, I kept going. I ended up running 7.03 miles. I did have 3 breaks, but even those walking breaks were faster than in the past (sub 16 min pace).
Overall, I'm ecstatic about today's run and I'm happy I took full advantage of my time off. Depending on how I feel this afternoon, I might do a quick Jillian Michael's workout and then relax this evening with a nice bubble bath. I love my days off from work...
