One of my favorite races... a race that I was not able to do for one reason or another last year. The Reindeer Run is a quick 5k at SeaWorld Orlando. The morning was cold and crisp, but ended up being perfect for the run.
Of course a cold front had to come in right before the race so it was pretty cold in the morning. I love getting to races early, especially these 5ks where you have to pick up your packet and what not. It was far too cold to linger around outside so I sheltered in my car for a bit. Eventually I got ready for the run and made it outside to watch the sunrise come over the park.
The race was set up well, with markers for different running paces set up so people could judge where they should start. There was a second wave of walkers/strollers that would start after the runners and a few strollers tried to make their way to the front of the start... they were promptly told about the second start. I don't understand people sometimes, why do they have to start in the front just to be in the way of people who are faster? When the race actually started, it actually seemed like everyone had gotten into the right spot. There is of course the initial moving around and finding your spot, but we spread out and everyone found their spots pretty quickly. There was the occasional person you passed and the occasional traffic points, but overall there was plenty of room to actually run. It was quite refreshing.
I didn't know what to expect since only a week ago I was in bed too sick to do anything. I ran on the elliptical and on the street, but I knew I wasn't 100%. Yesterday I ended up doing a weight workout and that didn't go over too well either, but more so because I hadn't worked out like that in a little while. So I went into this run knowing I wasn't going to run my best, but I was going to finish.
I was definitely sore, but I could run through that. It was more of my stomach and just my overall feeling that felt terrible. One thing would act up and then another one. Still, I walked when I needed to. I still pushed myself when I could and I came in sub- 30 minutes! Which was a first... Regardless of how I am feeling from whatever hit me last week, I have definitely gotten stronger and my times are definitely getting faster.
I did forget one thing about this race... No medal. It was a bit disappointing, I had gotten used to getting some bling. However, at the end they have a few local businesses (and the local hospital) have booths and I was able to get a swag bag that way. Everything from a lion stress doll to a new bag... Oh, and of course a race shirt... one that I will actually wear!

Being Busy and Running
I am still around, I promise. Life has just gotten pretty busy with work, vacations, the holidays, etc... I'm sure you all understand. I also spend most of the year at work and take most of my vacations around now so I'm in and out of the house and town. Luckily, I have been running whenever I can.
I recently went back home to California, which meant I went from 80 degrees to 40-50 degrees, which is not fun for someone who likes it around 70 degrees. And I know some of you get snow and think 40s are great, but I have avoided snow for a reason... Still, I managed one, cold outside run while I was home. It gave me an excuse to wear long running gear! I have to say, I love my Nike running pants. They're soft, warm, and super comfortable to run and walk in. The only problem is I forgot them back home and have to wait a few weeks for my parents to come out here before I get them back... Luckily, it's warm enough to still be running in capris in Florida.
I also manager to get sick... the worst I've been sick in a few years. I was forced to be in bed for over 12 hours, only managing to get up for a trip to the restroom. Luckily whatever it was (which is still debatable) only lasted less than 24 hours and I was back to working out two days later. That's the good thing about when I get really bed-ridden sick... I'm miserable and feel like I'm going to die, but for me it is typically quick.
I've been back in Florida for a few days now and I've been able to get back on the elliptical as well as get outside and run. The 60-70 degree mornings have been perfect, although they are expecting a cold front for the end of this week... right in time for my Christmas themed Reindeer Run 5k this Saturday!
The Reindeer Run is one of my favorite short little races and I haven't been able to do it for the last few years. But luckily this year I have the day off and I signed up for it as soon as I could. So far none of my usual 5k companions are going to be able to make it, but that's fine, I love this race regardless. More updates about the run to come!

Year Goals Passed! New Goals Set...
I am proud to say that while I'm extremely frustrated with my training right now, I do have good news to report. I have multiple long term goals that I'll probably have most of my life, but I also had a few goals that I wanted to meet during 2012. Well, I'm proud to announce that not only did I hit both my goals and then some!
My two goals for 2012 were:
As of today, I've run 522.68 miles! By the end of the year I plan to be closer to 600 miles, but probably won't surpass it. During the middle of the year I fell off track, but I chipped away at it every week and so now I'm way ahead of schedule. Of course, that means I have to up my goal for next year. So right now I just want to run more than 600 miles in 2013, but I might increase that to 650 or something else. I'll reassess that towards the end of the year.
I've definitely run more races this year than I have in the past. While I'll never compete as much as I did in high school when I spent every weekend one summer at swim meets, open water events, and triathlons, I have never run as many running events as I did this year.
While I didn't run the Disneyland Half Marathon, I did add the Tower of Terror 10 mile and Wine and Dine 1/2. I'm planning on running the Reindeer Run again this year, but since it's a 5k, I don't really count it as a "race". It will be nice to see how my times compare... So that means this year I ran 3 races where last year I ran 2. And next year? I'm looking at 5! The year after... 7! I'm saying this now for my legs sake and my wallet's sake... 7 is my limit.
As for my long term goals... my nutrition has been improving all year although there are definitely days where I'm craving some greasy wonderfulness, but those days are getting farther and farther apart. I'm cooking a lot more too which is nice. I've definitely lost weight this year and I've been able to keep most of it off, although it has definitely been a battle. Again, that's just going to be a life long battle which I'll never be able to let my guard down with.
Looking ahead my goals for 2013:
If you want to see more goals I've already set for 2014 and beyond you can check out the goal page...
In other news, I ran 3 days straight this weekend. Only ran just over 11 miles, but I'm pretty happy with them overall. I might even get 2 or 3 miles in tomorrow morning... who knows...
My two goals for 2012 were:
- Run 450 Miles (10 miles per week average)
- Run More Races!

Looking Ahead at 2012
I know I'm a day late and 2012 has already begun. I have a few running races and goals I know I'm planning and who knows what races I might add to that list. I also have one resolution I'm focusing on this year.
My first running goal is to run 10 miles every week. I know that some weeks I'll blow past this goal (like the weeks I run Half Marathons... aka 13.1 miles) and others it might be a struggle (weeks I'm recovering after races or if I get injured... which hopefully I won't). Still, it is my 2012 running goal, as well as a condition to my parents sponsoring two of my races each year.
My race schedule for this year (that I know of thus far):

My race schedule for this year (that I know of thus far):
- Princess Half Marathon- February 26th
- Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Mile- September 29th
- Wine and Dine Half Marathon- November 10th
- Reindeer Run 5k- December
If I can swing it (in my schedule and financially), I might try and throw in a 5k from time to time.
Now let's get serious of a bit. New Years Resolutions. While I feel as though keeping a New Years Resolution should be a resolution in itself, but that isn't what I'm focusing on right now. Before the new year I had read that one way to keep a resolution is to only have 1. I have 1 resolution that has two parts... one you focus on after the other is done.
My resolution is a common one, but one I have not yet been able to really control. I want to (1) lose weight and (2) keep it off. Eating right and working out... let's see if I can't get a handle on this whole weight thing in 2012, shall we?

Reindeer Run 2011
Today is my normal run day, but I definitely didn't do my normal run. No, I got to run through Sea World Orlando for the Reindeer Run 2011. I had a great time and got to see the park for the first time!
As you guys know, I had started looking for smaller races to do between half marathons and last week a friend of mine at work told me he was doing the Reindeer 5k and that it was a run through Sea World. I jumped on the chance to join and today we finally got to do it.
There was pre-registration, but I didn't really pay attention until it was too late so I arrived early and signed up at the event. The website had said that you might get a shirt if you register the day of and so I was hoping to get there early for a regular shirt. Well, they beat my expectations... I got a tech shirt! There wasn't really a goody bag, but I was more than happy with a 1/2 ticket to Sea World, the tech shirt, and food at the end. The race was only $35 so I wasn't expecting too much.
The run started just outside of the park and the first mile was around the parking lot. As one would expect, there really wasn't much to see. Then the second mile was inside the park and you ran past all the major areas. You past Sea World on Ice!, Shamu Stadium, Dolphin Nursery, Blue Horizon, etc... I wish you could have seen more, but I totally understand how that could freak out the animals if a few thousand runners kept running by.
Santa was out to cheer runners on, as well as some Sea World trainers, and even a drug dog (although I have a feeling he was doing a pre-opening sweep of the park...). Santa's cheering helped get me to the end. I finished the race in 28 minutes and 14 seconds!
At the end of the race there was a post-race party that had water and some sports drink, hot chocolate and cookies, goldfish, and more cookies. They had a nice center area you could relax, or two more pavilions. One pavilion had registration for the "Rudolf Run", I'm assuming a mile dash for little kids. The last pavilion had some booths, a stage where they handed out top 8 finisher awards and had a costume contest. There was a picture spot out so I got a picture with my friends who I went with.
They even had animals out with trainers walking around. We saw a opossum and heard there was a penguin somewhere. Then, they brought Clyde the sea lion out! I got really excited since I used to work at a marine mammal rehabilitation center and sea lions were our main patients. They let us get pictures with him so of course I had to get one!
The only things that I think they could have worked on is placing out their water spots a bit better. One water spot was at mile 1 and the next was at mile 1.5-ish. Then you didn't get water until you finished. Luckily it was only a 5k, but it would have been nice to have the second water stop between mile 2 and 3 somewhere.
I'll definitely be remembering this race for next year. It was a great way to get my weekly run in and work on my speed. Plus I can't really complain since I did get to run through Sea World before the park opened...
